Petco Halloween 2013
Petco Halloween products are some of my favorite things because Halloween is such a fun time of the year and it means fall is here!
Halloween is going to be big in the Hound Girl homestead this year because not only do I get to dress my dog up I get to dress up our baby! We pass out candy every year and I have seen more and more dogs dressed up and our trick o treating with their families. I have decided that this year when I’m at Petco getting Haylie’s costume I’m going to pick up some dog treats while I’m there to hand out to the dogs trick o treating!
Petco has some adorable new costumes this year! My favorite was the taco costume which comes in sizes xx-small to large, it will not fit Haylie but its still my favorite! They have a football costume for all those manly boy dogs and they have a devil costume with a tutu for all the girly dogs. There are a few costumes that Petco has for the big dogs and I cant wait to head on over and get her the lobster costume, it comes in her size XX-Large!
Haylie might now enjoy dressing up for Halloween but I sure love dressing her up, if you were to ask Haylie what her favorite thing about Halloween is she would tell you its the Petco Halloween toys!! I think the Petco Halloween toys are adorable and fun, we received a box of Halloween goodies and I put it on the floor because the next day I planned to take photos of the products. The next morning I walked into the kitchen and found…the Frankenstein dog toy laying on the floor, I immediately took a photo of it because I knew the toy would be destroyed in hours. I would love to say I cant believe that my dog helped herself to the box of goodies would be a lie…sadly this has happened before with Petco products we have been sent. What can I say she has good taste and loves Petco too!
Later outside I found the Dracula toy who was missing a leg and the zombie girl dog toy with a nice hole in her head. So, as you can tell she loves them and I love the selection of toys they have because there is everything from stuffed toys, ropes and cat toys in the Petco Halloween section, one stop shop!
When it comes to trick o treating you want to make sure you are safe while walking your dog, I know that we got our light up collar and leash from petco and we love the added safety it gives us when walking at night.
Petco Halloween costumes come in sizes from xx-small to xx-large, so head on over to your local Petco and check out the awesome selection. Please make sure to have a safe Howl-o-ween and remember Petco is your one stop shop for all your pets Halloween needs.
I did receive products in exchange for my own personal honest opinion and review.
Dog Food News Hill’s® Ideal Balance™
The latest in dog food news is buzzing about Hill’s Ideal Balance which has no corn, wheat, soy, artificial colors, flavors or preservatives. Here at Hound Girl we are excited to try this food and see what all the buzz is about. Many of you know that here at the Hound Girl homestead we are always open and willing to try out new dog food. Haylie is a very picky eater so I always try to bring a new food into her rotation and she is the ultimate taste tester due to her pickiness.
Are you curious about Hill’s Ideal Balance dog food? I was and the first thing I did was check out their website: Hills Ideal Balance. One of the things I was impressed with is that Hill’s sought significant consumer input on its pet food to better understand what pet parents wanted in a natural pet food. I love that they reached out to the consumers and listened to what pet owners wanted in their dog food.
Hill’s Ideal Balance was developed by the trusted pet nutritionists at Hill’s with consumers’ ingredient preferences first in mind. Meat is the first ingredient and what pet parent doesn’t love to see that?! There are ingredients such as apples, cranberries, and brown rice which are important to me when it comes to feeding a balanced dog food to Haylie.
Purchasing dog food can be overwhelming when there is isle after isle of dog food and I can remember as a new pet owner how intimidating it was trying to pick out a food for my dog. The new Hill’s Ideal Balance features an innovative new package design that research proves successfully differentiates it from other natural competitive brands and Science Diet.
Check out the behind the scenes for the making of the commercial for Hills Ideal Balance and make sure to watch the awesome commercial that they show at the end – Hills Ideal Balance Commercial

Busy Treats from Purina and more giveaway!
Purina Rocks, I’ll say it again. Purina Rocks…pure and simple but the Purina Busy Treats line rocks even more!
I was sitting at my desk on the laptop just staring at a word document…trying to figure out what to blog about. You would think my trusty companion dog Haylie would be at my feet but she wasn’t. She was off in our bedroom sleeping in the dark cool room. I sat in the home office with the blinds open enjoying the ac and the fact that its 100 degrees outside in august here in Texas and I was inside!
I had writers block…… Nothing new there! See Haylie is a LAZY dog…and it’s worse in summer because it’s so hot outside that we spend a lot of time inside. I am just not up for walks at 2am because it finally cooled off to 80 degrees outside. Well to my surprise the Fed Ex man showed up. I know she heard me answer the door and talk to him but did she even come out of the room?! No!
The package was from Purina! Inside the box was a carrying case and it was heavy, that can only mean one thing – it’s filled with goodies! The case was filled with Busy Treats for Haylie; it had everything from Busy Chewnola, Busy Rollhide, Busy Bone, Busy Bone minis, and Busy Heartyhides. In the case for me there were sharpies, note pads, post it notes, a journal and a bookmark along with more. The Busy Treats were a dream come true for a dog stuck inside due to the heat and the supplies were awesome for me as a writer! Now Haylie can keep busy every day with one of her Busy Treats and I can start to brainstorm for blog post ideas.
Haylie eats Purina Pro Plan and she loves the wet food from Beneful and she has been eating Purina products for well over a year now and I couldn’t be happier. One thing we haven’t really tried was the treats until recently. I will have to say Haylie’s favorite item out of the Busy Treat line is the Busy Chewnola, which I personally love the name and she loves the taste of it. I’ve taken all the items that were sent in the case for me and used it for inspiration for many upcoming blog posts on Hound Girl!
So maybe your dog eats a raw diet or your dog prefers a certain brand of food but you could always give Purina Busy Treats a try! Purina believes that Pets are their passion but Purina also gets inspired by us pet bloggers as well so they have offered one reader of mine a case full of goodies as well!
Contest Time!!! I’m all about keeping it simple, no raffle copter, no complicated forms or multiple ways to enter!
All you have to do is a leave a comment telling me how your dog inspires you to write and what is the passion behind the message you are trying to give with your blog.
You have till Wednesday night September 4th at 8pm CST to enter. One winner will be chosen and you will receive a carrying case full of goodies for you and your dog!
You can see the new Busy Treats TV commercial that just started running by going to www.busytreats.com/tv and you can follow them on twitter at @BusyTreats
Oh, and in case you forgot, Purina Rocks end of story.
Purina sent me the bag but there wasn’t any compensation. I just believe in Purina and their products and this post is all my own thoughts and opinions.
PlexiDor Pet Door
PlexiDor pet door is the Hound Girl new favorite pet product. My dog has only known a doggie door from the second she came home to live with us. All she knows is that the doggie door provides her with FREEDOM! I jumped at the chance to review a PlexiDor Pet Door because for years I have not been happy with the traditional vinyl flap pet doors.
We chose the extra-large door which is for pets up to 220 pounds, although our lab does not weigh that much she is a tall dog and we didn’t want her to have to bend down or bump her head when going through the door. We had our door installed in our back door, it replaced the current vinyl flap extra-large style pet door we had at the time.
Once the door was installed the first thing that I noticed was how nice the door looked installed. It looked like a window and blended in very well, it no longer was an eye sore. The PlexiDor Extra Large Door Unit is made of solid 3/8 inch thick sheet of shatter-resistant acrylic. There is ½ inch wide aluminum trim on the Extra Large PlexiDor Unit that will prevent damage to the panels from being chewed which can happen with some extra-large breeds. We do not have a chewing a problem but I do know there are several dogs out there who love to chew so this unit is perfect for that chewing dog over 100lbs.
I spent a lot of money each year purchasing replacement flaps for our old dog door and when you have the extra-large door the money adds up. With our new Extra Large PlexiDor pet door I no longer have to worry because I don’t have to purchase replacement flaps. Not only are the panes durable they are quiet, our dog just has to give a little push and go through then the doors close automatically with a tight seal and no banging!
We live in Texas and the heat can be well over 100 degrees several months out of the year and with our old dog door I could feel the money flying right out the door. Every time she would go in or out the flap wore down or would swing several times till it closed, even when it was closed it wasn’t a tight seal. The PlexiDor pet door is energy efficient because the panels have industrial grade weather seal on all four sides. The fact that the panels close right away and have a tight shield along with weather sealing on the panels the panes are tinted which keeps the sun from beating down through a door. Some might not worry about that but when you have a dog door that is half the size of your door you will think about it. One of the first things I noticed is that the wind no longer is a problem, the old door use to flap open due to the wind and with the PlexiDor that isn’t a problem.
With a door this size you might be concerned about security with the PlexiDor covered that because it comes with a key, lock and steel security plate. You can insert the key and lock the door or for added security benefits you can insert the steel security plate for added protection.
The PlexiDor pet doors come in several sizes and options – everything from a small size to extra large, door, wall, and glass installations. There is something to make ever pet happy along with even an electronic pet door.
Flying With Fido: How to Safely Travel With Your Dog
If you’re going out of town for a while, you have a few options when it comes to making sure your pet is safe and secure. Hiring a dog-sitter or using a local kennel are both options, but what if you want to take your pet with you? Bringing a dog on a plane or road trip comes with a few additional costs and concerns, but traveling with your companion is probably easier than you think. Here are a few things to consider when taking your dog on a vacation in a plane or car.
Dealing with anxiety – If your dog is used to being at home, the new surroundings and movement that come with traveling could cause anxiety. Since your dog will probably travel in a pet-safe crate or kennel while on the plane or in the car, make sure your pet is used to being in an enclosed space before your trip. Start with a few minutes at a time in the crate, and increase gradually to make sure your pet isn’t afraid of going inside. If your dog is especially anxious while traveling, talk with your veterinarian about the use of a mild sedative.
Identification chip – Pet identification chips function like a dog tag that can’t be removed. These chips are discreetly embedded under the skin, and can be read by a scanner. Having this chip can dramatically increase the chances of finding your dog if it’s lost while on vacation. Just as partial or full coverage auto insurance will protect your wallet from expensive repairs after an accident, an identification chip is like an insurance policy against losing your pet.
Making a pet airline reservation – Before heading to the airport, make sure you’ve confirmed your pet’s travel plans with the airline. Most airlines charge a fee for pet travel and accommodation, and require that you bring certain items, including:
- A portable kennel, in which the dog can comfortably lay down without touching the sides
- Food and water bowls
- Necessary veterinary documents, including proof of immunization and valid health certificate
Make sure to arrive at the airport early to give you and your pet plenty of time to board the plane.
Where your pet will travel on a plane – Smaller dogs can sometimes be taken into the main cabin and stowed in their kennel below the seat in front of you. If you opt to bring your pet in the cabin, it’s a good idea to have a few silent toys on hand, in case your dog gets restless. Larger dogs will travel in the plane’s cargo hold along with passenger luggage. The cargo holds are pressurized, so your pet’s ride will be just as comfortable as yours.
Road trip tips – As with any drive, make sure you’re covered by auto insurance before you get behind the wheel. If you’re looking for a provider, compare auto insurance quotes online to find the policy you need. While you’re on the road, make sure to stop for regular bathroom, water and food breaks for your pet. Bring a gallon jug of water in the car with you in case the places you stop don’t have a water source.
For many people, sharing their dog’s company makes a vacation more enjoyable. Just make sure that if you’re traveling with an animal, you make safety the first priority. Leashing your dog wherever you go, and keeping it fed and hydrated will help ensure that your vacation will be fun and memorable.

We are back!! We took a blogging break due to a little sweet angel baby that I had. We are so in love with her and so blessed to have her.
Kylie was welcomed into our family in the beginning of 2013.
Haylie is in LOVE with this baby. She sleeps next to her crib and doesn’t let the baby get too far out of her sight. I never had any worries in my mind that Haylie wouldn’t fall madly in love with her.
Now that we are out of the newborn stage I have more time to blog. I hope to be able to find time to come around and visit all of our friends and say hi so please bare with us as we make our rounds! We have missed you and we are so happy to be back!
